Tea on Thanksgiving

Went to "high tea" at Kensington Palace on Thanksgiving afternoon. It could not have been more picturesque. The tables had mini orange trees as centerpieces and our server was a beautiful bohemian man. I tell you-- it was wonderful.

And, did you notice that Thanksgiving is always on Thursday? No wonder it is my favorite holiday.

My Loves in Paris

Paris. The city of love. I found love in Paris.

A list of my loves:E.H. Gombrich-- The art historian who accompanied me through the Paris museums. The two of us had a grand time. He walked me through every time period and painter. I particularly liked what he had to say about Rembrandt while we stood in front of his work.

Bethany-- We're just good friends, not lovers. But, I love her nonetheless.

Gargoyle on Notre Dame-- I don't know how many pictures I took of this guy-- too many to count. But, when someone is so attractive and you are together on top of Paris, you just can't control the camera.

Tony-- He fell in love first, but it didn't take me long to be swept off my feet. All he had to say was, "Laura, my lover... Oh, Laura, Laura, Laura, I love you." And that's was that; we were engaged. I've never been charmed so fast. He asked if we could take a picture together for our marriage announcement. He invited me to come back behind the counter for the picture. I couldn't stop laughing. The best part was, he charged me 4.50 euros instead of 5 for my crepe.

Ooh la la...!

We had a Disney princess election-- there were official ballots and everything. This is what girls do when it's just girls, and it's been one endless girl's night since September. We nominated and voted to determine which girl is most like which princess. After much debate Bethany was choosen as Belle, Kayla as Jessie (Toy Story), McKenzie as Jane (Tarzan), Hailee as Meg, Dasily as Ariel, and myself as Anastasia. I know, I know for being so serious about the officialness of the election, you'd think we could have chosen "real" princesses. But let's be honest, a lot of the "real" princesses (i.e. Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella) have no personality. I'm just lucky that I was voted Anastasia. It means I get the most good looking prince-- Demetrius, who's not officially a prince, but charming regardless.

In the movie that is actually not by Disney, but don't blame us, it might as well be Disney-- it's got all the requirements: a girl, a boy, a villain who tries to keep the girl from the boy, a humorous sidekick in the form of an animal-like creature... anyway... in the movie, Anastasia goes to Paris. They sing "Paris Holds the Key to Your Heart" and they dance in the shimmering city lights. Tomorrow, I am going to Paris where I will do the same. Because Paris really does hold the key to your heart. Or at least it holds the key to most people's hearts-- it's the number one tourist destination in the world-- all because of the romance. And I get to go with forty other girls. Let me rephrase that for clarity: I get to go to the "most romantic city in the world" with forty other prince-less princesses. This could be torturous. I can see it now: the oo's the ah's, the wishing for a male of any sort, the talk of roses and chocolate and kisses on the Eiffel Tower. I can choose to either mock it or join in. My initial response: mock it. But, "when your heart says don't, the French say do!" So forget my initial response.

Bonjour Paris, let's fall in love.

This Kid is Going Places

" The earth takes such cold showers." - Matti

Pouring rain, deep puddles slipping under our feet when we least expect, walking to the Tate Britain art gallery from the tube, small lakes filling the bottoms of our shoes, wind turning our umbrellas inside-out, water dripping into our eyes so that we can't even see where we are going, -- and that's what he says when we're borderline miserable. The Matti of the above quote is 12 years old. I think he's poetic.

Just before Matti commented so delightfully on the weather, I was about to comment on the situation saying, "Um... I'm wet. And um, like I'm cold."

Da Ba Dee Da Ba Di

I'm blue, but I'm not sad. I'm actually happy. It's just that I went on a walk and I took blue pictures...

This post could also be interpreted as a political statement of party loyalty since blue is the unofficial color of the Democratic party. This political statement by pictures was not intended, but while we're on the subject...

The British people are entirely invested in the United States election. I heard talk of nothing else in the days prior to the election and they're still stuck on the subject in the two days since Obama's victory speech. Suddenly, everyone loves Americans. They feel that we've suddenly woken up from a decade of blindness. I don't know if I agree or disagree, but it sure is fun to be part of the excitement over here.

I'm hopeful that Obama can do good things. If he does nothing else, I loved this quote from BBC news, "[Obama] is a gifted speaker and in times of national grief or doubt it is hugely important for Americans to have a president able to capture, shape and occasionally lift the national mood." And another comment by BBC, "Mr Obama has made history by winning power. As he attempts to make history in the way he exercises it, he will be weighed down by high expectations. He is going to need all the many gifts - and all the luck - that got him here. " And one last word, "Mr Obama will have at least one asset no other American president since Kennedy has enjoyed - a huge reservoir of international goodwill."

And now we wait and watch and see... I wish you luck Mr. President.
